In the decades after World War II, the United States built an interstate highway system, hundreds of airports, a massive network of waterworks, and expanded port facilities and other infrastructure that significantly boosted the country’s economic output. In addition to continuing the growth of the overall economy, much of this infrastructure is in significant need of repair. In addition, better functioning infrastructure, including more efficient public transit systems and more environmentally friendly water and sewer systems, boosts economic growth and quality of life. It is estimated that the cost of bringing America’s infrastructure to a state of good repair by 2025 at $4.6 trillion, of which only about 55 percent has been committed.
Our aggregate products will continue to service this market for years to come.
StonePoint’s products are used in three different end markets-public infrastructure and private residential and commercial construction. It is estimated that nationally approximately 1/3 of aggregates are sold into the public infrastructure market, 1/3 into the private commercial/industrial construction and 1/3 into the private residence markets. It is estimated that approximately 3 times as much aggregate is used in infrastructure than in private construction per dollar of expenditures.
Aggregates sold to ready-mix concrete and asphalt producers are used in the construction of roads, bridges, tunnels, utility systems, schools, airports, dams, harbors, as well as other large government projects. Crushed rock can also be used as a base for road construction, in levees and dams and in the nation’s airports. It is estimated that one mile of interstate highway contains about 30,000 tons of aggregate.
Sub-divisions and residential housing use crushed rock for foundations and sand and gravel for ready-mix concrete. It is estimated that the average house contains about 400 tons of aggregate.
Industrial parks, offices and retail development use significant quantities of crushed rock for foundations and sand and gravel for ready-mix concrete. Aggregates are also used for oil and gas pad development, and access roads for the oil field services industry.
